Friedrich Friesen

Biography

Friedrich Friesen (1784–1814) was a German gymnast and physical educator who lived during the early years of the modern gymnastics movement. His brief life coincided with the growing interest in physical education and athletic development in German-speaking lands.

Though his life was cut short at age thirty, Friesen's involvement in gymnastics reflected the emerging emphasis on physical fitness and disciplined training that would characterize 19th-century European athletic culture.
