Biography

Galusha A. Grow rose from the Pennsylvania countryside to the highest reaches of national leadership, serving in the U.S. House for more than a decade and becoming Speaker in the early years of the Civil War. He used his platform to protect the rights of farmers, championing policies that would allow families to settle public lands and keep a steady supply of food for the Union cause.

After leaving Washington, he returned to Harford Township to oversee his farm and remained a quiet counselor to neighbors, his decades of service leaving an enduring example of integrity and calm determination.
