Biography
Georg August Lumbye (1843-1922), the son of the celebrated composer Hans Christian Lumbye, carried on a family legacy through his own musical gifts. His compositions added new waltzes and lively pieces to Copenhagen’s soundscape, delighting audiences with melodies that celebrated the Danish spirit.
With a deft sense of rhythm and a love for orchestral color, Lumbye helped sustain a popular musical tradition well into the twentieth century. He rests at Holmen Cemetery, where admirers remember the warmth and brightness he brought to Danish concert halls.
