George Africanus

1763–1834 (age 71)

Biography

George Africanus was born in West Africa, brought to England, and became one of Nottingham’s earliest black entrepreneurs, establishing a respectable tobacconist’s business and living as a free man of considerable industry.

He and his family became well-known members of St Mary’s Church, and the parish recalls him as a civic partner whose steady character inspired both admiration and the hope that future generations would remember his unusual story of resilience.
