George Barnes

1859–1940 (age 81)

Biography

George Barnes, born in 1859, pursued engineering with a practical heart, contributing to river and rail works that steadied Fulham's growth and made the neighbourhood safer for its families, and he believed in training young apprentices while insisting on high standards.

Outside the office he was known for lending practical experience to civic projects and for welcoming neighbours who sought advice, so that when he died in 1940 his memorial in Fulham Cemetery recalled both his creative skill and his calming presence.
