George Bridgetower

Biography

George Bridgetower, a virtuoso violinist of Afro-European heritage, won admiration for his fiery performances in London, Rome, and beyond, including the first performance of a Beethoven violin sonata that later became known as the Kreutzer Sonata.

Although he traveled and taught widely, he remained linked to London’s musical life, and his grave at Kensal Green Cemetery recalls his role in bringing diverse voices to the capital’s concert halls.
