Biography
George F. Elliott brought experience from the Civil War era into the new century, rising to become Commandant of the Marine Corps and directing the service through a period of modernization and increasing global engagement. He focused on strengthening training, improving conditions, and preparing Marines for the varied demands of expeditionary duty.
After overseeing the Corps’s transition to the twentieth century, he continued to champion the professionalism and devotion that had marked his own service; he is remembered at Arlington National Cemetery as a steady guardian of the Corps’s traditions.
