George Green
1793–1841 (age 48)
Biography
George Green rose from modest beginnings to become a self-taught mathematician and physicist, publishing the celebrated Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism that introduced what we now call Green's functions.
While continuing to run his father's mill, he nurtured a circle of pupils and correspondents who came to Nottingham to learn from him, leaving a legacy of insight that rests with him at St. Stephen's Church, Sneinton.
