Biography

George Hearst rose from a miner’s beginnings to become one of the nation’s foremost mining magnates, investing in silver, copper, and gold fields while supporting infrastructure and schools that helped California mature as a state.

In his later years he served as a U.S. senator, guiding federal attention to the West and leaving a legacy of philanthropy and familial pride that is honored today at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.
