Biography

George Henry Corliss brought precision engineering and imagination to the industrial age, inventing the Corliss steam engine that revolutionized horsepower and efficiency for factories across the nation. He tirelessly refined his designs while mentoring young engineers who admired his ingenuity.

Corliss’s factories and charitable interests in Providence reflected a belief that invention could improve everyday life, and he now rests at Swan Point Cemetery among the society he helped to shape.
