George Opdyke

Biography

George Opdyke was a prominent banker and entrepreneur who served as mayor of New York City during the Civil War, overseeing the city’s contributions to the Union cause at a time of great strain.

After leaving office he returned to private business while remaining a committed civic presence until his death in 1880; he is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
