George Peacock
1791–1858 (age 67)
Biography
George Peacock, born in 1791, was a mathematician whose scholarship bridged the precise thinking of calculus and the wonder of astronomy, and later became Dean of Ely. He played a central role in the reform of Cambridge University, introducing modern methods of algebra and supporting the young men who would carry British mathematics and observational science into the Victorian age.
He was also deeply connected to Ely Cathedral and its community, where he tended pastoral needs as well as intellectual ones, encouraging the study of the heavens while nurturing a love for the cathedral town’s spiritual heritage. His influence lasted far beyond his death in 1858, as his students and colleagues continued to benefit from the clarity of thought he championed.
