George Rainsford Fairbanks devoted his life to documenting the events of the American South and the territories that became Florida, drawing on his work as a lawyer and public servant to bring clarity to early American and Seminole histories.

He was a steward of the University of the South, ensuring its archives and collections endured while preserving genealogies and local stories for posterity, and he now rests in the University of the South Cemetery.
