Biography

George von Lengerke Meyer, born in 1858, devoted his talents to the service of the nation and to the people of his adopted home. He served as United States Postmaster General and later as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of State in the administrations of Presidents Roosevelt and Taft, carrying with him an unshakable commitment to civic duty and to the expansion of American maritime strength.

In addition to national service he gave generously to local causes, welcoming neighbors to his family home and supporting charities that comforted sailors, merchants, and their families.
