George W. Elkins

Biography

George W. Elkins combined business acumen with a desire to give back, turning success in transportation and finance into support for libraries, hospitals, and educational institutions. His philanthropic spirit was rooted in the belief that prosperity ought to lift others, and he lent his time and resources to civic causes that promised broader opportunity for his neighbors.

By the time of his passing in 1919 he had earned a reputation for generosity, and Laurel Hill Cemetery became his final resting place, where his legacy of civic-minded stewardship continues to inspire.
