Biography

George W. Melville began his naval career as a gifted engineer and rose to become the chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering, bringing rigorous scientific standards to the propulsion of the fleet and guiding the Navy through a period of rapid technological change.

He also joined Arctic expeditions, notably the search for the Jeannette, and his field notes and leadership in the icy wastes helped lay the groundwork for future exploration; his steadfast service is honored at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
