Biography

George W. Murray rose from the bonds of slavery to become one of South Carolina's leading voices for African American rights, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and continuing to advocate for justice even when the political tides turned against him. His education work and published essays reflected a lifelong commitment to equality and civic engagement.

In later years he remained an earnest correspondent and mentor to younger activists, a testament to his belief that progress was the work of generations; those who visit Lincoln Cemetery know him as a man who never stopped seeking a fairer nation.
