Biography

Born in 1832, George Walter Vincent Smith spent his life in Springfield developing a passion for art and cultures from around the world, collecting pieces that reflected his inquisitive spirit and his desire to bring beauty to everyday life. His travels to Asia, Europe, and the Middle East yielded an eclectic assemblage of ceramics, weaponry, and decorative arts that he cherished and carefully preserved.

His decision to endow Springfield with that collection and with the building that now bears his name ensured that generations of residents and visitors could share in the wonder that first captivated him; he is remembered as a quiet philanthropist who believed that art could lift a community, and his remains rest in Springfield Cemetery.
