Biography

George Windle Read built a career as a cavalry and artillery officer before commanding the U.S. Second Army during World War I, overseeing training and tactical preparation for the American Expeditionary Forces in France. He brought calm resolve to the massive logistical and leadership challenges of the European campaign.

Upon his return he continued to shape the Army’s readiness, emphasizing professional education, adaptable doctrine, and the care of soldiers; he now rests in Arlington National Cemetery beside the men he led through war and peace.
