Biography
Georgia Lee Lusk, born in 1893, dedicated her life to education and public service, beginning as a teacher in the rural schools of New Mexico and rising to serve as the state's superintendent of public instruction. Her deep understanding of the challenges faced by farm families fueled her advocacy for better classrooms, textbooks, and support for teachers.
In 1947 she became the first woman to represent New Mexico in the United States Congress, carrying the hopes of her neighbors to Washington and championing legislation that respected the dignity of rural communities. Her courageous leadership and persistent voice for fairness continue to inspire those who walk past her grave at Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
