Biography
Gideon Sundback, born in 1880, brought a mechanical curiosity from Sweden to America and devoted himself to solving a deceptively simple problem: how to fasten garments securely yet easily. While working at the Universal Fastener Company, he perfected the interlocking teeth and slider design that became the modern zipper, earning patents and ushering in a new era of convenience for clothing, luggage, and countless other products.
As the zipper became ubiquitous, Sundback's calm perseverance and precision continued to influence engineering conversations, and he remained rooted in the Wisconsin communities near Greendale Cemetery, where his grave invites appreciation for an invention that became integral to daily life.
