Giles Buckner Cooke
1838–1937 (age 99)
Confederate officer and educator
Biography
Giles Buckner Cooke resigned himself to a life of service even before the Civil War, and he carried that commitment through years as a Confederate officer under Stonewall Jackson and beyond. In peace, he turned toward education, teaching students and preserving the memoirs and journals that illuminate the era's trials.
Those who encountered him valued his calm intellect and belief in the redemptive power of learning, and Ware Episcopal Church Cemetery now shelters a man who bridged the painful past with a hopeful future through teaching.
