Biography
Giuseppe Valerga, born in 1813, became the first Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem following the restoration of the patriarchate in 1847, guiding the Catholic faithful while seeking respectful engagement with other religious communities. He championed the renewal of sacred sites and cared for pilgrims drawn to the storied city.
He died in 1872 and was interred at the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, leaving a legacy of bridge-building and pastoral concern that continued to shape Catholic life in the Holy Land.
