Biography
Graceanna Lewis, born in 1821, was a Quaker naturalist whose curiosity about plants and animals blossomed into a lifetime of careful observation and illustration. She traveled widely for her day, lecturing on botany, advocating for abolition, and writing for journals so that the beauty of nature might inspire a more compassionate society.
Her unwavering commitment to justice and education carried her through decades of change, and when she passed in 1912 the Providence Friends community remembered her not only for her scientific mind but also for her gentle moral courage.
