Gunārs Astra became a moral compass for many, refusing to remain silent about the imprisonment of his fellow citizens and bravely insisting on political freedoms even while the Soviet apparatus sought to break him.
His unwavering conscience inspired later generations of defenders of liberty, and Forest Cemetery keeps the memory of his sacrifices among the hearts of a free Latvia.
