Biography

Hans Gustav Güterbock, born in 1908, was a preeminent Hittitologist whose scholarship revealed the language, laws, and literature of an ancient civilization; a refugee from Nazi Germany, he rebuilt his academic career in America and taught at the University of Chicago. He published numerous works, deciphering texts and mentoring generations of students.

Generous with his time, he supported colleagues and hosted gatherings that bridged the past and present, always mindful of the human stories within every tablet.
