Hans Nicolajsen

1803–1856 (age 53)

Biography

Hans Nicolajsen, born in 1803 in Denmark, traveled to Jerusalem with a missionary zeal to tend to European pilgrims and to bear witness to the holy sites. He learned Arabic and Hebrew, ministered kindly to the poor, and served as a gentle interpreter between cultures.

He was instrumental in securing the Protestant cemetery on Mount Zion so that fellow believers could be interred with dignity, and his own grave there still marks the place where he ended his labors in 1856.
