Biography

Harley D. Nygren enlisted in the Coast Guard in the 1940s and rose to become an admiral who, as the first director of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps, shaped a new partnership between science and maritime service.

He continued to champion safer seas and environmental stewardship, mentoring young officers and remaining active in Coast Guard circles even after retiring to share stories of honor and dedication.
