Biography
Hayman Rooke was a botanist and naturalist whose scientific interests reflected the Enlightenment values of the eighteenth century. Born in 1723, he lived during an era when the systematic study of plants and natural history was gaining prominence among educated men. His botanical pursuits would have connected him to the growing scientific community of his time.
Rooke's eighty-three-year lifespan allowed him to contribute to the advancement of botanical knowledge throughout his life. His burial in the Church of St Edmund honors his place in his local community and his dedication to natural philosophy.
