Biography

Helen McLehose was a notable figure in late 18th-century Scottish society, remembered for her intelligence, wit, and social connections. Born in 1739, she moved through Edinburgh's literary and social circles, where she became acquainted with some of the era's most celebrated figures, including the poet Robert Burns, with whom she maintained a celebrated correspondence.

McLehose's life exemplified the intellectual vitality of Edinburgh during the Scottish Enlightenment, a period of remarkable cultural and philosophical achievement. Though constrained by the social conventions of her time, she carved out a space for herself as a woman of letters and refined sensibility. She was interred at Glasgow Necropolis, one of Scotland's most distinguished burial grounds, where she rests among other notable figures of her era.
