Henri Breuil

1877–1961 (age 84)

Biography

Henri Breuil devoted his scholarship to the earliest chapters of human history, traveling from the Loire to the Pyrenees to record Paleolithic cave art with a patient hand and an acute sense of wonder while serving as professor at the Collège de France.

Through expeditions, publications, and teaching he helped make the lives of prehistoric people feel near to modern audiences, mentoring generations of archaeologists before his burial in Belleu.
