Henry Chandler Bowen (1813-1896) made his fortune as a merchant and publisher, founding the influential magazine The Independent to advocate for moral causes while promoting domestic manufactures.

He invested in his Woodstock community, hosting literary salons and sponsoring public celebrations that reflected his conviction that commerce and culture should flourish together.
