Henry De la Beche
1796–1855 (age 59)
Biography
Henry De la Beche turned his early fascination with fossils into a campaign for systematic geologic study, drawing detailed maps of the Devonshire beds and other strata while establishing the Geological Survey of Great Britain.
He also founded the Museum of Practical Geology to share science with broader audiences and urged better conditions for miners; his memory rests in Kensal Green Cemetery.
