Biography
Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon (1741–1811) represented his family’s interests in Parliament before being elevated to the peerage, where his measured voice was welcomed on the questions of the day. He carried the conventions of noble duty forward with a sense of purpose, whether in debates among ministers or in the management of his estates.
He supported the Church of the Ascension, Burghclere, and the villagers there speak still of the kindly manner in which he listened to their needs, securing his place in local memory as well as in the annals of national service.
