Henry Heusken

Biography

Henry Heusken (1832–1861) was a Dutch-American interpreter who played a vital role in early diplomatic relations between Japan and Western nations. Born in Amsterdam and raised in America, he served as an invaluable linguistic and cultural bridge during Japan's first encounters with Western diplomacy.

His tragic death in 1861 marked one of the earliest casualties of Japan's turbulent opening to the West. Interred at Kōrin-ji Temple, Heusken's brief but significant career exemplifies the complex and often dangerous role of interpreters in nineteenth-century international relations.
