Henry John Rous
1795–1877 (age 82)
Biography
Henry John Rous (1795–1877) spent most of his early life in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of admiral after providing steady leadership during extended periods of peace and conflict. His deep knowledge of navigation and logistics made him a trusted voice on Admiralty boards and an advocate for sailors' welfare.
After leaving active service he devoted time to politics and became a respected Member of Parliament, then turned his methodical mind to British horse racing, where his weight-for-age scale and stewardship of the Jockey Club brought clarity and fairness to the sport. He was laid to rest at Kensal Green Cemetery, where admirers may still pay tribute.
