Biography
Henry M. Mathews was born in 1834 and became a respected lawyer before being called to statewide service as the seventh governor of West Virginia, where he sought to heal the post-war divide and strengthen the state's schools.
After leaving office he returned to practice while remaining a voice for education, good governance, and reconciliation with all citizens, and his grave at Old Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery marks the life of a dedicated jurist and statesman.
