Henry Thatcher was born in 1806 and dedicated more than six decades to the service of the United States Navy, guiding ships and crews through calm seas and troubled waters with a measured temper and deep knowledge of maritime practice.

His peers remembered him for calm counsel, steady discipline, and concern for the families left ashore, and he now rests under the shade of Forest Hills Cemetery where loved ones visit to honor his decades of devotion.
