Holmes Conrad rose from Virginia roots to become a respected lawyer and statesman, serving as Assistant Secretary of State under President Cleveland and offering careful counsel on diplomatic correspondence.

After returning to Richmond he mentored younger attorneys, and his measured judgment is still recalled by those who relied on his friendship; he rests in Mount Hebron Cemetery and Gatehouse.
