Biography

Horace Porter was born in 1837 and rose to prominence as a Union Army officer whose leadership in the Civil War earned him the Medal of Honor. After the war he remained in public life, serving as aide to General Grant and then as United States Ambassador to France, where he worked to strengthen Franco-American relations.

Beyond diplomacy, Porter was a prolific writer and loyal friend to veterans, preserving the memory of those who served and helping to establish institutions that cared for them. His keen sense of duty and honor left a lasting impression on both the military and diplomatic communities.
