Biography
Howard B. Cushing was a U.S. Army cavalry officer whose bravery during the Civil War earned him recognition among his peers, and he remained committed to the Army’s frontier duties in the years that followed. A member of the storied Cushing family, he brought energy and tact to every assignment, establishing himself as a valued leader under trying conditions.
While commanding troops in Arizona Territory in 1871, Cushing was killed in action while leading a mission against hostile forces, and he now rests in San Francisco National Cemetery among fellow soldiers whose courage helped secure the Western frontier.
