Hristo Smirnenski

1898–1923 (age 25)

Biography

Hristo Smirnenski, born 1898, rose swiftly from modest beginnings to become one of Bulgaria's most beloved poets and writers of the early 20th century, penning free verse that spoke for the working class and the poor with fierce tenderness. He published in magazines, joined fellow writers, and remained engaged with the hopes of the people during a period of social upheaval.

Ill health claimed him in 1923, but his vivid portrayals of urban life, childlike wonder, and revolutionary fervor continue to inspire readers; his resting place at the Central Sofia Cemetery is a place where admirers still pause to reflect on a life of generous imagination cut far too short.
