Biography
Hubert R. Harmon devoted his life to the development and strengthening of American air power, rising to the rank of U.S. Air Force lieutenant general while shaping the service through both wartime leadership and peacetime vision. A disciplined officer and educator, he helped lay the intellectual and organizational foundations that would allow the Air Force to emerge as an independent and modern branch of the armed services.
His greatest legacy rests with the United States Air Force Academy, where he served as the first superintendent and guided the fledgling institution through its formative years, inspiring cadets with a focus on honor, excellence, and service. Harmon’s steady influence continued to be felt through the many graduates who carried his lessons into service around the world, and he is remembered with respect at the Academy Cemetery.
