Biography

Hugh Boyle Ewing bore the responsibilities of a Union general with equal parts courage and compassion, commanding troops in the Western Theater and defending the rights of the soldiers under his care. After the war he served as a diplomat and public official, extending the same disciplined judgment to peacetime challenges and advocating for veterans' welfare.

Beyond the battlefield he nurtured the bonds of family and friendship, and as he now rests at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, the generations that followed remember him for balancing martial valor with a generous spirit.
