Ian McKay

1953–1982 (age 29)

Biography

Ian McKay, born in 1953, served with the Parachute Regiment and became one of the youngest officers to be entrusted with a vital role during the 1982 Falklands campaign. He led a platoon at Mount Longdon with fearless determination, a moment of leadership that earned him the posthumous Victoria Cross when he was killed in action.

His comrades recall the quiet courage with which he encouraged others to press forward despite great peril, and that selflessness remains a lasting testament to the sacrifice he made at just twenty-nine years old.
