Biography
Ichikawa Kansai (1749–1820) lived during a vibrant period of Edo culture, witnessing and participating in the artistic and intellectual developments of his seventy-one years. Though specific details of his life remain modest in the historical record, his longevity and burial at the respected Hongyō-ji Temple attest to his place within his community.
Kansai's life spanned the latter half of the eighteenth century and the opening years of the nineteenth, a time of significant cultural achievement in Japan. His final resting place at Hongyō-ji Temple reflects the respect and remembrance accorded to him by those who knew him and valued his presence in their lives.
