Biography
Isaac Lea balanced his curiosity for the natural world with a successful career in publishing, describing countless species of freshwater mussels and sharing the results of his investigations with a growing community of naturalists.
He served as a leader of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and his correspondence with collectors around the globe kept American malacology at the forefront of nineteenth-century discovery.
