Biography

J. Barry Mahool, elected mayor of Baltimore in 1919, guided the city through the transition from war to peacetime by pressing forward improvements in sewers, playgrounds, and public health while insisting that municipal services should serve every resident.

Even after leaving office he remained active in civic associations, supported libraries and schools, and encouraged young people to take pride in their neighborhoods, always mindful that the city’s strength rested on the care of ordinary citizens.
