Biography
J.D. Matthieu used the power of the camera to capture the quiet dignity of everyday life, from urban streets to the pastoral surroundings of his homeland. His photographs earned admiration for their sensitivity, helping Dutch visual culture find new forms of expression.
Colleagues recall his gentle manner and his belief that every person’s story deserved to be preserved with care, an ethos honored beside his grave at Westerveld.
