Biography
Jack Ruby, born in 1911 in Chicago, built a name for himself as a Dallas nightclub owner, where patrons flocked for music, conversation, and his friendly hospitality. He took pride in cultivating entertainment venues that sought to offer patrons safety and good company, and he often backed young performers in hopes of seeing them succeed.
Ruby’s life took a sudden turn in 1963 when he fatally shot Lee Harvey Oswald after President Kennedy’s assassination; the subsequent trial and his health struggles in custody overshadowed the years that followed. He died in 1967, and while his story remains complex, those who knew him remember a man capable of warmth even as history recorded a tragic act; he was laid to rest at Westlawn Cemetery.
